Repairing a damaged pipe buried beneath several meters of compacted earth is no easy feat. It becomes even more challenging when the pipe is located in hard-to-reach areas, such as under buildings, established gardens, or infrastructure like driveways, roads, or retaining walls. In the past, the only viable solution was to dig up and replace the pipe, regardless of the situation.
Fortunately, modern technology has provided us with a solution: trenchless pipe relining. It's a fast and innovative method that offers a cost-effective "no-dig" repair option for inaccessible pipes. At first glance, pipe relining may sound too good to be true, but it is the latest in pipe repair technology, creating a seamless lining that prevents infiltration and exfiltration.
Now, how does pipe relining work? At P24 Pipe Relining Sydney our pipe relining Sydney process is straightforward that involves five steps:
The first step in the pipe relining process is to determine the pipe's condition. A CCTV drain camera is sent down to inspect the pipe's interior to achieve this. The camera looks for any blockages that may require clearing, visible damage, and junctions that require later addressing. This information is used to decide on the best way to prepare the pipe for relining.
If any blockages are found in the pipe, a hydro jet drain cleaner is used to clear the debris and thoroughly clean the pipe wall to ensure a strong bond between the new and old pipes. This step is necessary to ensure that the resin bonds well with the pipe's interior. If done improperly, it may cause uneven linings in the newly formed pipe.
After the pipes are cleared, a CCTV drain camera inspects them again. This is to ensure that all intrusions are removed and the pipe is free of debris and ready for relining. If the pipe is clear and damaged, the next step is to prepare and reline the pipe.
The relining installation process begins by mixing epoxy resin with a hardening agent. The resin is then poured into the liner and rolled repeatedly to ensure that the resin is evenly distributed and impregnated into the material.
A special inversion drum is then used to blow the liner into the pipe, utilising compressed air to insert and invert the liner (so it becomes inside out). Once complete, the liner's interior with the impregnated resin is on the outside and pressed against the original pipe using compressed air.
Afterwards, the resin needs time to cure, forming a hard protective coating along the pipe. This process can either be left to cure by itself, or the process can be expedited by using hot water.
Once the damaged pipe is completely lined, any junctions or inspection pits need to be cut out. Inspection pits can be done from the surface with a grinder or similar tool. However, with junctions, a robotic cutter needs to be used. Finally, the pipe is checked to ensure the work was correctly done without any wrinkling or open spaces in the resin.
